Alligator Alley

Drove 150 miles looking for alligators, and had to sneak thru a closed freeway exit to find them: fires have raked large patches of swampland, dry enough to burn, it seems; public access has been 'discouraged'. Everglades Parkway is the only interesting bit of highway so far, as the reeds and rushes stretch to the horizon, offering a sweeping view. The rest of Florida's freeways are cut through monotonous flat and level forests, that just go on forever. Stay out of the left lane if you're not prepared to do 85.

But the bridges! Oh my, do they have bridges here! Miles and miles long, arching over vast expanses of open water. Very impressive.

Priceline got us a great room at a Marriot, near Tampa for US$50. Posted rate on the door is $599!! As if.
